The Children's Hospital Trust has announced the commencement of construction for the groundbreaking new R110 million Orthopedic Unit at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital.

This dedicated unit will cater to the needs of over 1400 clubfoot patients annually, conducting 1000 surgeries and providing care for more than 5500 outpatients.

It will serve as a cornerstone of specialised care, offering multidisciplinary services under one roof.

This unit represents a significant advancement in pediatric healthcare.

Dix-Peek says the building action comes after a response to greater demand on orthopedic healthcare and to make various resources more "accessible" in the unit.

"Because technology and the type of surgery and the operations being done are increasingly complex - they need support of other structures like ICU at Red Cross. At the same time, we also need support of occupational therapists, social workers, dieticians - none of whom were physically on site. I think we're going to benefit from that level of accessibility from these support structures who are so very necessary."

Dix-Peek says "enormous planning" went into making this decision.

While construction has started, "official ground breaking" happens on Wednesday, 17 April 2024, says Dix-Peek.

Dix-Peek adds that the end of the road is exciting but the journey through construction is anticipated to be "a complex process" for all those affected.

"In order to build one block, one almost needs to start moving other blocks around and it's a very complex process of changing certain facilities around to accommodate the new build which has already started."
