Regarding water supply to areas in the north and outer west of the city, Mayor Kaunda said he was pleased with the progress made thus far as all 70 air valves along the Northern Aqueduct have been replaced and some areas are now starting receive some water.

eThekwini mayor, Cllr Mxolisi Kaunda introduced two contractors that will be undertaking major service delivery projects in eThekwini. In the first engagement, Mayor Kaunda introduced the contractor that will commence with construction of the Southern Aqueduct Pipeline to the Umlazi community on April 7.

The R1, 2 billion project will significantly improve water supply in areas such as Umlazi, Chatsworth, Folweni, Shallcross Nsimbini, KwaMakhutha, and Golokodo.

The project is expected to be completed in 24 months. During the first six months, the contractor will undertake temporary repairs of the existing pipeline to improve water supply while construction is underway.

Mayor Kaunda emphasised to the contractor the importance of completing the project on schedule as residents in the southern region have experienced intermittent water supply for too long.

“We want this project to be completed in exactly 24 months and we have asked the contractor to work on weekends and public holidays to fast track the construction,” said Mayor Kaunda.

He warned unscrupulous business forums from invading the construction site saying that acts of criminality will not be tolerated as this will cause unnecessary delays to the project.

“We are concerned that continued acts of vandalism along this pipeline are causing delays. In KwaXimba, the contractor is on site to build a two megalitre package plant, which will be commissioned by next month. We have also commissioned two boreholes in the area to bring temporary relief to the community,” said Mayor Kaunda.

Meanwhile, in the second engagement, Mayor Kaunda introduced the contractor that will be commencing with the rehabilitation of a 200-metre stretch of Astral Drive in Kharwastan.

This was during Operation Siyahlola that Mayor Kaunda conducted on April 9 in Chatsworth.

He said, “We have allocated a budget of R1, 2 million for this project. Other departments, including the Water Department, will also fulfil their respective roles within the project’s scope as they have already replaced leaking pipes,” said Mayor Kaunda.

He appealed to residents for patience during the construction period.

“We have instructed our teams to minimise traffic disruptions as much as possible. Fortunately, the road’s width allows for traffic to be redirected to one lane at a time, ensuring a smoother flow. Once upgrading of one lane is complete, work will progress to the next lane,” Mayor Kaunda explained.
