The road, which leads to the Soul City area in Sweetwaters, was never upgraded and remained a dirt road.

A Msunduzi Municipality councillor has urged residents from Sweetwaters to stop politicising the developments in the area and focus on the positives, which include repairs to one of Sweetwaters’ busier roads.

The road, which leads to the Soul City area in Sweetwaters, and is used by buses, taxis and schoolchildren daily, was never upgraded and remained a dirt road. However, around six months ago, the municipality delivered a load of crushed stones to begin the repairs.

Residents in the area said they have seen no progress after the stones were delivered and want to begin the repairs themselves. They accused the municipality of dragging their feet.

Councillor Babashane Ntuli expressed his disappointment over the complaints raised by residents. Ntuli said the development is for the community and not for a political party and cautioned the residents from making claims that were politically driven.

What they are saying doesn’t add up. How can they take something that was brought by the municipality and repair the road themselves?

He added that the municipality was going to temporarily repair the road with the stones. Last Monday, municipal workers arrived to lay out the crushed stones to level the road. This, Ntuli said, is a temporary repair until the municipality obtains the budget to complete the repair properly.

Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Ntobeko Mkhize confirmed that maintenance work had commenced in the area. This road repair is part of its annual maintenance programme, Mkhize said.

“We are communicating with the respective councillor and should there be any issue with the project the councillor will engage the residents,” she said.
