Battered by potholes and clogged with coffee-coloured water, the Crocodile River Road has become a daily obstacle for residents of Mokgoba and motorists using Du Randt Road in Putfontein.
What should be a vital access route has instead turned into a danger zone, forcing the community to take matters into its own hands.
Frustrated by delays and citing a lack of immediate intervention from the government (because the piece of land the road is on is privately-owned), residents launched the Crocodile River Gravel Improvement Project under the leadership of the Crocodile River Community Development Forum (CRCDF).
“This land is privately-owned, which is why the government couldn’t tar it. Our secretary and I approached the farm owner and told him our predicament. He permitted us to pave it but emphasised that we should not create a permanent structure,” said CRCDF chairperson Patrick Tshikwiya.
Community members were urged to donate bricks and cement to help pave the badly damaged stretch of road to restore safe passage.
“This road is important to us. It connects us to the main road, but it damages people’s cars. Taxi drivers don’t want to use it and instead drop passengers off on Du Randt Road, which is far. Our people end up being mugged,” Tshikwiya added.
The road is a critical lifeline for the area, yet ambulances, taxis, police and scholar transport often struggle to navigate the uneven surface, especially after heavy rains.
For many residents, access to emergency services and daily transport has become uncertain and, at times, impossible.
Help the community
Through donations raised internally, the Forum managed to pave a quarter of the road before material ran out. With the project now at a standstill, the Forum is appealing to Benonians for assistance with rubble, broken bricks and cement to help complete the remaining sections and make the road safely drivable.
“We kindly request rubble, bricks and cement, as well as a stamper to make this road drivable. The community did its best. The project remains unfinished. We humbly request help from the Greater Benoni area to complete the project.”
The CRCDF treasurer, Carly Bikizana, shared Tshikwiya’s sentiments, saying she is concerned about the safety of community members who have fallen victim to crime.
“Thanks to the Mokgoba community and the taxi associations for helping us with the project. Please continue supporting us. Cars are being damaged. Taxis refuse to come here at night. We are worried about the safety of our residents,” she said.
