JDA commences construction of several key features at the Midrand depot in Rabie Ridge

JDA has commenced with construction of key features at the Midrand depot, employing five local labourers to ensure that Rabie Ridge benefits from the work being done.

The Johannesburg Development Agency (JDA), on behalf of Pikitup, is leading a series of infrastructure projects designed to enhance waste management facilities throughout the city.

As part of these initiatives, construction has begun on several key features at the Midrand depot in Rabie Ridge, expected to be completed early next year.

Pikitup operates 12 strategically located waste management depots, 44 garden refuse sites, and four active landfill sites.

JDA spokesperson Kenneth Nxumalo noted that the infrastructure projects would support Pikitup’s mission of providing integrated waste management services, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment. “Current progress [at the Midrand depot] includes the handover of the site and the completion of site establishment, with the contractor now beginning the excavation of foundation trenches.

“The project’s scope includes constructing a guardhouse, a boundary wall, platforms, widening of Falcon and Stilt streets, and storm water reticulation. It also encompasses sewerage reticulation and rehabilitation, water reticulation, construction of retaining walls, stone pitching, and landscaping.”

Charles Jones, the chairperson of the Rabie Ridge Residents Association, had previously expressed concern that local youth were not benefiting from the presence of the depot in their community. He urged the city to prioritise hiring young people from the Rabie Ridge.

In response, as part of the JDA’s economic development programme, aimed at building capacity, enhancing skills, and transforming communities, Nxumalo said a total of five local labourers have been appointed for the project.

The project is part of the JDA’s public infrastructure delivery programme, which aims to optimise the city’s investment in essential infrastructure.
