The modern facility will feature 21 buildings, a 3 000 m² hall, a therapy centre with a heated pool, reinforced foundations to withstand sinkholes, and cutting-edge security to ensure the safety of its learners.

Construction of the new Rotara School just outside Carletonville is advancing quickly, with the project already ahead of schedule despite being planned as a three-year development. Work on the site, located next to the extension of Onyx Drive, started almost a year ago.

“This is a  three-year project, but we are currently ahead of schedule,” confirmed site manager Norman Magashule.

The new facility will be much larger than the current Rotara School at Waters Edge, consisting of 21 buildings, including a 3 000 m² multi-purpose hall.

Built with safety and rehabilitation in mind

The new school has been specially designed for learners with disabilities, with features such as:

  • Insulated walls and roofs to regulate temperature year-round.
  • Safety rails, ramps, and inward-opening windows for learner safety.
  • A heated therapy pool with a shallow section and water jets to assist learners in rehabilitation.
  • A washing bay for buses and vehicles.
  • A high-tech security system and reinforced ceilings to prevent criminal break-ins.

By this week, the multi-purpose classrooms were already 90% complete.

Protected against sinkholes and power outages

Since the school is being built in a dolomitic area prone to sinkholes, the entire complex is set on a reinforced floating foundation with aprons. This ensures the buildings will remain stable even in a worst-case sinkhole scenario.

A large generator room is also being built to guarantee power during outages, addressing one of the problems the school currently faces at Waters Edge, where cable theft often disrupts electricity supply.

Community excitement

Local ward councillor Carlos Rebelo welcomed the progress:

“I am so excited about this new school and cannot wait for it to be finished, because it is for our children.”

The project will bring enormous relief, as the current Rotara School is located in an area marked for ground stability problems, further highlighting the urgent need for the new facility.
