The Vereeniging Taxi Rank is set for a significant transformation with a complete rebuild.

SEBOKENG.- The R120 million Sebokeng Driving License Testing Centre’s (DLTC) project is underway.

This was revealed to Sedibeng Ster by Sedibeng District Municipality (SDM) Transport and Infrastructure MMC, Nkosinathi Ndwandwe.

The Sebokeng DLTC had remained a white elephant after decade of delays on the project with construction costs spiraling beyond the original budget, widespread vandalism despite millions spent on security, and the facility still incomplete and unusable.

The Gauteng government is said to have injected an additional R138 million to complete construction of the long-delayed Sebokeng DLTC.

More than R80 million has been spent on the project, yet the facility remained non-operational almost a decade since construction began. The original projected cost for the project was R63 million, but more than R80 million is said to have already been spent on the construction of the facility.

Ndwandwe said that a contractor has been appointed with the site handed over on June 17.

“Site establishment began on June 18 and the estimated completion of the works is 17 December 17 2026. DRT appointed DBSA to implement the project on our behalf. The DLTC has commenced at 8 percent, due to complete in December 2026.”

Meanwhile, the Executive Mayor of SDM, Lerato Maloka, Ward 15 Councillor, Prudence Hlanyane and staff from the SDM Executive Mayor’s office and the Department of Roads and Infrastructure Department conducted an oversight visit at the Vereeniging Taxi Rank (Taxido Junction) recently to check on the status and completion of the facility.

The Vereeniging Taxi Rank is set for a significant transformation with a complete rebuild aimed at enhancing safety and convenience for all users.  It is said that the oversight visit was meant to oversee the project’s progress and ensure it meets the community’s needs.

The key features of the new taxi rank will include safe structures, hawkers’ stalls, modern toilets, fresh roofing, paved roads, a workshop and car wash facilities, the facility will also be equipped with CCTV cameras, this is to ensure the safety of both the public and vendors.

“Although the official opening date has not yet been announced, the new contractors, who began work on the project in 2024, aim for the project to be completed before the end of 2025,” said the SDM.
