CORNELIA – Residents of Cornelia and the neighbouring community of Ntswanatsatsi could soon benefit from a more reliable water supply following the resumption of construction on the long-delayed Cornelia Water Reservoir project.

The restart of the project marks an important step towards improving water security for the two communities, which have experienced repeated water shortages over the years. Whenever pumps supplying water from Frankfort break down, many households are left without running water and have had to rely on municipal water tankers.

Construction on the reservoir came to a halt after the original contractor abandoned the site, delaying a project regarded as essential for improving the area’s water infrastructure.

Construction renewed

The renewed construction has been welcomed by community leaders, who believe the completed reservoir will reduce disruptions to the water supply and strengthen the municipality’s ability to provide a more consistent service.

Reliable access to clean drinking water remains one of the most pressing service delivery challenges facing many communities in the Mafube Local Municipality. Residents have repeatedly raised concerns about prolonged water interruptions and the impact these have on households, schools and local businesses.

Once completed, the new reservoir is expected to improve water storage capacity and help maintain supply during infrastructure failures or maintenance on the existing system.
