A reinstatement left behind after a Joburg Water repair has turned Eland Street into a dangerous road, and ward councillor demands urgent action.

Ward 99 councillor Hendrik Bodenstein demands urgent action on Eland Street in Robin Hills as the road continues to be a nightmare for residents and the motorists driving on it.

The road has a large section that has not been resurfaced eight months after it was first dug up during a water repair.

While the leak itself was repaired, the section of road was never patched and resurfaced. Instead, a deep, uneven crater remains in the centre of the street, creating dangerous driving conditions for residents.

“This [unsurfaced section of road] has been here for the past eight months, and every time there’s been a complaint, JRA says they’re busy with backlogs. The cars need to drive all the way around, and this road is completely damaged,” said the councillor.

Cars are forced to slow down or swerve into the opposite lane to avoid damaging their vehicles. The situation becomes even more dangerous at night when this uneven section is difficult to see. Drivers can hit it unexpectedly and cause damage to tyres, rims, and suspension.

Bodenstein said the issue has been repeatedly reported, but there has been no progress. “This is the state of a lot of roads in this area where there’s been water leaks, and nothing’s been done about it.

“I will continue to escalate the issue with the relevant department until the road is fully restored.”

Until the road is properly resurfaced, Eland Street remains an obstacle course and a growing source of frustration for the Robin Hills community.
