The residents, motorists and councillor of Ward 27 have welcomed the resurfacing of seven problematic roads in the area which had become a major cause for concern. According to Ward 27 councillor, Ernest Smith, work to rehabilitate the roads should be completed within two months.
AFTER months of waiting and complaining, Ward 27 residents and motorists are breathing a sigh of relief as work gets underway to rehabilitate seven “problematic” and damaged roads in the area.
Ward 27 councillor Ernest Smith said, “Venice Road is somewhat done. Goble Road was started last week, and they are now moving into Windermere. Expected completion is in two months’ time.”
On the list of the roads to be resurfaced are Hartley Road, Venice Road, Churchill Road, Smiso Nkwanyana Road (Goble Road), Lillian Ngoyi Road (Windermere Road), Sandile Thusi Road (Argyle Road), and Mathews Meyiwa Road (Stamford Hill Road).
Smith said the Roads Department has begun re-tarring Lillian Ngoyi, having completed Smiso Nkwanyana and Venice roads. “A big thank you goes out to the ratespayers association and community police forums who have helped me drive this process for the benefit of the residents over the years. Our work is yielding results after many months of requests, escalations and engagements with municipal officials/departments,” said Smith.
He added, “If you have businesses or homes in any of these streets mentioned, please be careful, drive slowly and do not park vehicles in the road.”
The work underway in Ward 27 are among several that are going on throughout eThekwini. The rehabilitation of Alpine Road has also brought relief to Overport residents and motorists who use the busy road to access areas such as Musgrave, Manor Gardens and Springfield.
Welcoming the revamp on social media, Eb Sheik said, “Well done, with the amount of rates being charged in Morningside Mentone Rd, Hollander, and Sir Arthur all should be redone. The roads need re-marking please.”
His call was echoed by Mahmood Vawda who said, “Road re-marking should follow very soon after.”
Karl Flynn said, “Horrible intersection that. The amount of idiots that park on those corners and double parking and race up and down with backfiring exhausts. Please make sure they complete the job this time with proper road markings and parking bays, no parking or stopping lines and signs where relevant.”
