Residents of Brackendowns, in Alberton, are growing increasingly frustrated as potholes continue to spread across local roads, turning everyday commutes into hazardous obstacle courses.
Several streets in the area show severe surface damage, with deep cavities exposing stones and underlying layers of the road, a clear sign of road damage.
The damage believed to be caused by a combination of ageing infrastructure and recent rainfall has left motorists swerving to avoid holes filled with water and loose rubble.
In some cases, temporary patchwork repairs are already breaking apart, offering little relief to drivers.
“For months, we have been reporting this, but nothing changes. You either hit a pothole and damage your car or you drive into oncoming traffic to avoid it,” said a resident in the area.
The pothole problem is not unique to Alberton, but residents say the situation has reached a critical stage.
Community members want the City ofEkurhuleni (CoE) to prioritise road maintenance, conduct proper resurfacing rather than temporary fixes, and communicate clearly about repair timelines.
Patience is wearing thin as damaged roads continue to pose safety risks and disrupt daily life.
