A year later, Amanzimtoti Country Club and Conservancy has been able to fix a bridge that was damaged by the April floods.
THE construction of the new R3.5m bridge at the Amanzimtoti Country Club and Conservancy is in progress and is expected to be complete early next week.
It has almost been a year since the April floods that wreaked havoc in KwaZulu-Natal destroyed the golf course and washed away its two bridges. After months of physical labour and raising funds, the Amanzimtoti Country Club and Conservancy were able to repair the nine-hole course and clubhouse in October. In the interim, the other nine holes have been inaccessible due to the two bridges that washed away.
Club captain Mike Halse said, “The insurance paid out, however, it was nowhere near the cost of one new bridge. With the help of the clubhouse’s income, club members, donations, the community, businesses, fundraising events and loans, we were able to purchase a new bridge. It would have been put up about two weeks ago, but the unfavourable weather put it on hold. On February 27, it was assembled, and the next day it was put up. The bridge is also a lot higher than the previous, so we are hopeful it will hold should there be another flood. The ramps now have to be on, and we are hopeful it will be finished on March 7.”
Aside from the bridge, they are replanting the grass to ensure the other nine-hole course is in pristine shape ahead of its expected opening in mid-March. The club is also hopeful that the opening of the full course will help generate more funds, to help pay off their debts.
Mike added that it feels awesome to get things up and running again and that it would not have been possible without the help of those who assisted either physically or financially. “We were almost forced to close during the effects of Covid-19, looting and the floods. We have come a long way, and look forward to the course being fully functional again,” he said.
