The construction on Voortrekker Street has had an adverse impact on residents and other road-users.
It has been causing long delays for motorists who travel between the Lydenburg central business district, schools and The Heads residential area.
The refurbishment of the 3km stretch of road started at the end of January.
Themba Sibiya, media and marketing manager for Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM), confirmed on Monday that the construction will continue until the end of October.
Mega Paints, one of the businesses that have been inconvenienced, has been nearly completely inaccessible.
“I had to build a new pathway from Nedbank to my business, Mega Paints, next to the bank. The cost was a few thousand rand. The construction of Voortrekker Street started in January and we are now in June. My business will be insolvent if my clients can’t reach the store for months on end,” said Wimpie van Aardt, owner of Mega Paints.
“I spoke to the appointed construction company, MartMol Trading. It is planning to tar two of the lanes within the next two weeks. The heavy rain in May delayed the progress,” said Spiros Couvaras, a DA councillor.
“The Voortrekker Street project is well underway. The surfacing of the closed lane and the laying of storm-water pipes have been completed. Work will soon resume with the surfacing of the other lane. During this phase, traffic will be diverted to the finished lane. This is a multi-year project funded through the Municipal Infrastructure Grant. Funds allocated to the project are still available, as it is a strict condition that grant funding cannot be used outside of the intended purpose. The project is expected to be completed by October. The municipality would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused to the public and businesses as a direct consequence of the road construction,” said Sibiya.
TCLM appealed to motorists and members of the public to be patient and exercise caution during the construction period.
