Councillor Hlanyane shared her satisfaction with the progress and emphasised the positive impact the development has had on the local economy.

VEREENIGING – On August 7, Emfuleni Local Municipality (ELM) Mayor Sipho Radebe, accompanied by Ward 15 Councillor Prudence Hlanyane, conducted an oversight visit to assess the progress of ongoing construction at the Vereeniging Taxi Rank.

The mayor was joined by representatives from the Department of Roads and Transport, the main contractor, project engineers, and other key stakeholders involved in the development.

During the walkabout, Mayor Radebe was briefed on both the progress made and the challenges encountered in completing the long-awaited project.

He expressed gratitude to the department for driving the initiative and restoring hope to local residents.

“This project has been more than a decade in the making. Today, we can confidently say that in a few months, the community will finally see tangible results. Initiatives like this are truly commendable,” said Radebe.

He also extended his appreciation to Councillor Hlanyane for her consistent involvement and advocacy since the project’s inception.

Councillor Hlanyane shared her satisfaction with the progress and emphasised the positive impact the development has had on the local economy.

“So far, 18 local SMMEs have benefitted from the project, and over 60 local labourers have been employed. This is a significant milestone for our community,” she said.

The new taxi rank will feature fully functional offices for various taxi associations, dedicated stalls for informal traders, a workshop providing services for taxis, and solar panels to supply sustainable electricity to the facility.

Historically, the Taxido Junction Taxi Rank, originally constructed in 1991/92 by a private developer, was demolished in 2014/15 as part of PRASA’s broader efforts to upgrade the Vereeniging Station precinct. However, the project was halted due to financial difficulties faced by the contractor.

The current contractor officially commenced construction on April 29, 2024. According to ELM, approximately 80% of the work has been completed, and the facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
