“An approved traffic accommodation plan is in place to ensure that the traffic flow is adequately managed during the construction period.”
The widening of Lynnwood Road for the A Re Yeng Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system will commence later this month.
“Construction will only occur on Lynnwood Road between Simon Vermooten Road and January Masilela Drive,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
Mashigo said the contractor established the site along this alignment in May 2023 at the corner of Freesia Street and Jacobson Drive in Lynnwood Ridge.
The construction is envisaged to be completed before the end of March next year.
“During the construction, the contractor will remove one lane in each traffic direction.
“An approved traffic accommodation plan is in place to ensure that the traffic flow is adequately managed during the construction period.”
The construction entails that the road widening will start from the outer road edge towards the fence line and road reserve on Lynnwood Road.
“On completion of the road widening on the outer lane of Lynnwood Road, the traffic will be switched onto the widened road and existing adjacent lane.”
Mashigo said two lanes per direction will be open for traffic at all times or at least from 09:00 to 15:00 daily.
The Tshwane metro will further ensure continuous access to all adjacent properties.
“This has been set up in the traffic management plan,” Mashigo stated.
He urged motorists and pedestrians to take note of the temporary road signage during the construction period.
“The public is also advised to be vigilant of construction vehicles that will also use the road,” he continued.
However, the R146.8-million intersection upgrades to improve both the road network and non-motorised transport infrastructure have commenced.
Three intersections along Lynnwood Road, University Road and Atterbury Road are set to be upgraded.
These upgrades entail the road being broadened while smaller bus stations will be built on different parts of the roads.
“This project will take 18 months to complete,” said metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo.
Mashigo said the project comprises two phases:
Phase one entails upgrading the Roper and Lynnwood intersection as well as upgrading the Atterbury and Lynnwood intersection.
The Hartbeesspruit culvert upgrades to accommodate the new widening of Lynnwood Road will also be required for the new BRT system.
Phase two entails upgrading of Atterbury and Justice Mahomed intersection.
Local ward councillor Siobhan Muller said she is happy that Line 2B upgrades are also starting.
“The Line 2B is on Lynnwood Road between Loftus and Menlyn. This comes after many years of waiting.”
Muller said the upgrades on this particular section entail a link between Line 2A that goes up to Loftus through to Menlyn.
She said town planners and traffic engineers have already planned the upgrades.
