Hlomuka said the upgrade of main road P16-2 from gravel to blacktop will cover 27,3 km at an estimated cost of R639 million. This project will facilitate easier and safer transportation routes, fostering economic growth and prosperity, he said.
Some 900 jobs will be created with more than 20 emerging contractors being appointed to help with the construction.
The minister was joined by Umvoti Local Municipality Deputy Mayor Ntombi Ngubane, local house of traditional leadership Inkosi uDlomo and Inkosi uSithole, stakeholders, ward councillors and senior officials.
Hlomuka concluded his day by officially unveiling the contractor for the upgrade of P16-2 and engaged the local community of wards 5, 6 and 14 of Umvoti Municipality.
Residents welcomed the announcements.
“It’s really rewarding to see developments happening in our area as we have felt neglected for a while now. This road has been an issue and we have been asking the department to attend to it. We will now have smooth and safer travels and I hope that there will not be any issues with the project and it will be completed on time,” said resident Thulani Ndlanzi.
