Athletes from rural communities surrounding Kgopaneng Village have welcomed the completion of a newly upgraded sports facility.

Kgopaneng Sports Complex, situated in Ward 16 of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM), was officially handed over to the communities by Mayor Eddie Maila on Monday, July 27.

Phase two of construction reaches completion

The contractor for the projects second phase was officially announced on May 19, 2025. Phase one included the construction of buildings and related infrastructure, as well as civil projects, an outdoor gym, netball and tennis courts and other sports equipment.

The completed development features a new soccer pitch, a children’s playground, upgraded netball, volleyball, basketball and tennis courts, modern change rooms, a secure perimeter fence, and paved areas for an outdoor gym and indigenous games.

Maila said the multi-purpose sports complex was designed to promote sport, recreation and healthy lifestyles.

Mayor urges community to protect investment

“Today, we are not only opening a sports facility, but investing in the dreams and potential of our young people,” said Maila.

“These upgraded facilities will provide a safe and conducive environment for sporting activities, talent development and community recreation. We call on residents to protect this investment so that it continues to benefit future generations.”
