Once completed, the treatment works is expected to deliver 100 megalitres of potable water per day, improving supply across eThekwini.
ETHEKWINI Municipality mayor, Cyril Xaba, has welcomed the announcement by uMngeni-uThukela Water of the Lower Umkhomazi Bulk Water Supply Scheme Phase 2 Water Treatment Works project.
The project forms part of an R11b infrastructure development programme aimed at strengthening water security and improving supply across eThekwini and the South Coast region.
It is part of the broader Lower Umkhomazi system, which is intended to draw raw water from the Umkhomazi River and increase treatment capacity to meet rising demand driven by population growth, urban expansion and periodic drought conditions affecting KwaZulu-Natal water sources.
Once completed, the treatment works is expected to deliver 100 megalitres of potable water per day, significantly boosting supply reliability for both domestic and industrial users in the region.
In a statement, eThekwini said the mayor stresses the importance of collaboration between government, uMngeni-uThukela Water, traditional leaders, and residents in protecting water infrastructure against theft and vandalism.
