The temporary road closures will take place over five days in September, starting on September 4.

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) has advised motorists on temporary rolling road closures to facilitate blasting next to the N3 Market Road Overpass Bridge as part of the ongoing construction between Gladys Manzi Road and New England Road Interchange.

The temporary road closures will take place over five days in September, starting on September 4.

The days and times of the closures are as follows:

  • Thursday, September 4, from 2:30pm to 3pm
  • Tuesday, September 9, from 2:30pm to 3pm
  • Thursday, September 11, from 2:30pmto 3pm
  • Tuesday, September 16, from 2:30pm to 3pm
  • Thursday, September 18, from 2:30pm to 3pm

Sanral has warned motorists that during these times access will not be allowed onto the N3 between Ashburton and New England Road Interchanges via the interchange ramps or other connecting roads.

The full closures will take place as follows:

  • 2:30pm to 2:45pm – closing of N3 and other connecting roads and blast
  • 2:45pm to 3pm – cleaning up of any debris on all roads
  • 3pm – reopening of N3 and other connecting roads for all vehicles

Sanral’s KwaZulu-Natal specialist geometrics engineer, Jason Lowe, said that these closures had been carefully planned with assistance of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), and that it will be monitored and managed during the closure time.

The R103 will be available as an alternative route during the blast, but Sanral has cautioned motorists that substantial delays are likely. Additionally, closures may be adjusted depending on weather conditions of the day. A statement of cancellation in that case would be shared.

“We understand that these road closures cause major disruption and have planned them to take place at times when the disruption is minimised. Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try and delay trips over this period or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion,” Lowe said.

He added that public transport operators have been asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives routes.

“Light vehicle traffic, as well as emergency services and traffic management are advised to make use of alternative routes,” he said.
