Ward 89 roads get long-overdue facelift after months of pothole complaints. Councillor Zander Shawe and residents drive change, with more repairs still to come.

Residents of Ward 89 can finally breathe a sigh of relief after months of frustration. Following an extensive pothole repair initiative, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has transformed the ward’s roads from hazardous stretches into safer, smoother routes.

Ward 89 councillor Zander Shawe initiated the campaign by escalating the issue to the JRA and raising awareness through videos and public engagement. The community’s consistent efforts, particularly through pothole reporting, also played a significant role in prompting action. A dedicated team has been working tirelessly to repair the damaged roads as part of the JRA’s effective response.

The improvements have not only enhanced road safety but also revived residents’ confidence in service delivery. The restoration project stands as a testament to the impact of collaborative action between residents and local leadership.

“There is no expected completion date yet; there are still many roads outstanding,” Shawe noted.

He also highlighted the direct benefits of the repairs.

“Residents will be able to drive safely on the repaired roads, and they won’t suffer damage to their vehicles or tyres caused by potholes.”

Residents in Constantia Kloof, as well as parts of Allen’s Nek, Kloofendal, Weltevreden Park, Panorama AH, Florida Park, Floracliffe, Fairland and Northcliff, are encouraged to contact Shawe on 083 445 2067. They can request to join the relevant councillor group for Ward 89, where issues can be reported and updates provided.

The Roodepoort Northsider has reached out to the JRA for comment on the delays, the long-term measurement of the repair project’s success, and how the agency intends to maintain the roads going forward. Their response, once received, will be published in a follow-up article.
