SANRAL PROVIDES AN UPDATE ON THE TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF CONSTRUCTION WORKS ON THE N2 SECTION 20

The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform road users, local municipalities, stakeholders and affected communities that construction activities on the N2 Section 20 project have been temporarily suspended. This suspension may result in travel delays and disruptions during this period.

SANRAL apologises to all affected parties for any inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension.

The suspension was initiated by the contractor due to administrative matters that SANRAL is currently finalising and approving. SANRAL is committed to resolving these matters by 21 August 2026, after which the contractor will be in a position to lift the suspension and resume construction activities.

As a State-Owned Company, SANRAL is required to exercise due diligence in the management and processing of its finances and must comply with the applicable financial governance requirements, including those prescribed by the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA). While SANRAL recognises the urgency of the matter, the necessary administrative and financial processes and approvals must be properly concluded before payment can be processed.

SANRAL remains committed to the project and to ensuring that the matter is resolved as expeditiously as possible. We also acknowledge the importance of continued engagement with the Stakeholders, Rumdel Construction and the affected communities, particularly given the significance of the national route N2.

SANRAL and the contractor wish to confirm that the contract remains valid and in force and has not been terminated. Both parties remain committed to the successful completion of the project.

During the suspension period, the contractor will ensure that the project site remains safe for road users and the public. A Traffic Safety Officer and a core maintenance team will remain on site to monitor conditions and undertake essential maintenance activities. The alternative routes available are illustrated below.

2 Alternative routes

  • Alternative route no 1 – N2 at Matatiele to Mount Fletcher route
  • Alternative route no 2- via Flagstaff, Lusikisiki to Port St Johns via the R61 and then re-join the N2 in Mthatha.
