“Following the demolition of the Lancaster Terrace bridge in February 2024, and its subsequent reconstruction, the demolition and ultimate reconstruction of the Langford Road Bridge forms part of the next phase of SANRAL’s capacity and safety improvements to both the N3 and the eThekwini road network,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN provincial specialist geometrics engineer.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) wishes to inform motorists of a temporary road closure on the N3 for the demolition of the Langford Road Bridge, as part of the N3 Westville to Paradise Valley upgrade.
The temporary road closures will take place as follows:
- N3 full closure (both directions) between St James Avenue and the M7 Farningham Ridge Interchange:
- From 4:30pm on Saturday, August 23, 2025, to 5am on Monday, August 25, 2025.
“The demolition and ultimate reconstruction of the Langford Road Bridge is a crucial step in enabling the addition of extra lanes on the N3 below. Once its demolition is complete, vehicle traffic will be accommodated on the soon-to-be-opened Lancaster Terrace bridge. A temporary steel bridge will be constructed near the current Langford Road bridge to accommodate pedestrians until the new bridge is complete,” continued Lowe.
As required for the safety of both road users and the construction team, full traffic accommodation plans are in place. A detailed map showing the closure location is included below, and an alternative route guide is available on this link: https://www.nra.co.za/project-n2n3-upgrades?region_id=eastern
CLOSURE LOCATIONS:
N3 east (south) bound closures (Pietermaritzburg to Durban):
The full closure of the N3 will take place at the M7 Farningham Ridge Interchange. Heavy vehicles travelling South are encouraged to make use of the M7. Heavy vehicles travelling east and north are encouraged to make use of the M19. The M13 (King Cetshwayo highway) is available for light vehicles travelling east. The M13 ramp onto the N3 Eastbound at Paradise Valley Interchange will also be closed.
N3 west (north) bound closures (Durban to Pinetown):
The full closure will take place at Extension 13 at St James Avenue, where N3 west-bound traffic will be diverted onto St James Avenue and Harry Gwala Road as the final point of diversion for traffic. There will be a full closure of the on-ramp onto the N3 from Harry Gwala Road, and traffic will be diverted onto St James Avenue to join the M13.
“We understand that these road closures cause major disruption, so we have planned them to take place at times when the disruption is minimised. Trucks and heavy vehicles are advised to try to delay trips over this period or find suitable staging areas to avoid major congestion. Public transport operators are asked to ensure their drivers are aware of route closures and alternatives affecting their commuter routes. Light vehicle traffic, as well as emergency services and traffic management, are advised to make use of alternative routing. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s patience during the ongoing major road enhancements,” said Lowe.
