The R533 was closed due to damage by recent heavy rains in the Lowveld region.

The Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport (DPWRT) has confirmed that a temporary bypass is currently under construction on the R533 between Graskop and Bushbuckridge.

According to the department’s spokesperson, Bongani Dhlamini, the road was completely closed on December 22, following a safety assessment by MEC Thulasizwe Thomo, cutting off a vital route for both residents and the local tourism economy.

“The R533 is more than just a local road, it is a gateway to the world-renowned Panorama Route. Since its closure, motorists have been forced to take lengthy detours, impacting travel times and fuel costs,” said Thomo.

Dhlamini said the DPWRT regards the bypass as a priority, noting that it will restore efficiency.

The project is moving quickly, though the schedule remains dependent on the summer weather. It is expected to be finished in one week, provided heavy rainfall does not cause delays.

While the bypass is in place, assessments for permanent repairs are nearing completion. Once finalised, the department will begin the process of appointing a formal contractor for the reconstruction.

The R533 currently remains strictly closed and motorists are urged not to attempt to cross the damaged sections for any reason, as it poses a high safety risk.

Until the bypass is officially opened, all road users traveling between Bushbuckridge and Graskop are advised to travel from Graskop via Sabie to Hazyview, and vice versa.
