Table View beachfront project nearing completion ahead of festive season

The City of Cape Town’s long-running upgrade of the Table View beachfront has entered its final phase, with refurbishment of ablution facilities at Dolphin Beach and Bokkomsbaai now under way.

The work forms part of a major project to rehabilitate and revitalise the popular 3km stretch of coastline between Dolphin Beach and Bokkomsbaai, said the City in a statement.

According to the statement, the latest phase began earlier this week and includes connecting the upgraded ablution facilities to the City’s sewer network, as well as constructing a post-and-rail fence between the Bokkomsbaai parking area and Foam Street.

If work remains on schedule, the project is expected to be completed by mid-December, ahead of the festive season.

Beach remains open during construction

The beachfront and beach will remain accessible to residents and visitors while the work is carried out.

The City is, however, asking the public to stay clear of clearly demarcated construction areas, use designated beach access routes, and follow on-site signage and safety instructions.

Temporary ablution facilities have also been provided while the refurbishment is under way.

Mayco member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Eddie Andrews, thanked residents and businesses for their support during the project.

“We are now in the final stretch with all of our efforts focused on meeting the project deadline,” said Andrews.

“It has been a massive undertaking to upgrade the facilities, improve the public spaces and strengthen the coastal infrastructure. I’m looking forward to seeing an end-result that will benefit all of us for decades to come.”

Major upgrades completed

The Table View beachfront project began in July 2022, with work focused on improving infrastructure, public spaces, beach access and the coastal environment.

One of the first major components was the rehabilitation of the dune system between Dolphin Beach and Bokkomsbaai, he said.

The dunes were reprofiled and replanted with dune-specific vegetation to help stabilise the system and strengthen the area’s natural protection against storm surges and the effects of rising sea levels.

The vegetated dune corridor is now in an adaptive management phase, with the City continuing to monitor and maintain the vegetation and wind-net infrastructure.

Several other major upgrades have already been completed, including improvements to beach access and stormwater infrastructure at Bokkomsbaai.

The stormwater outlets and retaining structures have been upgraded, while the White Waters parking area has also been improved.

A new parking area opposite Visagie Street has been completed, along with the refurbishment and upgrading of parking areas along Beach Boulevard and Otto du Plessis Drive between Marine Circle and Perlemoen Street, said Andrews.

New coastal walkway opens up access

Another major addition is the new 2km coastal walkway stretching from Marine Circle to Bokkomsbaai.

The existing walkway between Marine Circle and Dolphin Beach has also been restored, while new beach access paths have been created along the route.

According to Andrews, the upgrades are intended to improve the experience for both residents and visitors while strengthening the coastline for the future.

“I’m confident that these upgrades are already contributing to creating a pleasant and alluring environment. Come December, we will be able to enjoy the full complement of upgrades.”

With the ablution facilities now being refurbished, the City is working towards completing the final phase before the December holiday period, when the Table View beachfront is expected to once again draw large numbers of residents and visitors.
