Upgrades to the Moripane access road aim to improve stormwater flow and reduce flooding, while creating jobs to benefit the local community

Work is underway on the Moripane access road in the Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality to upgrade the area’s stone-pitched stormwater control system.

The project forms part of the municipality’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure while creating employment through the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP).

Municipal spokesperson Thomas Mashabela said more than 200 participants are involved in various activities to maintain and improve local infrastructure.

He explained that the upgrade is designed to improve water flow during heavy rainfall and reduce the risk of flooding.

“This project demonstrates the capacity within our Infrastructure Development Department and EPWP teams. With unpredictable rainfall, effective stormwater systems are essential to protect roads and minimise flood damage,” said Mashabela.

He added that the initiative also equips participants with practical construction skills while contributing to service delivery in the municipality.
