shoprite checkers gets big bay commercial site for r25m
the two-hectare commercial site at big bay that went to public tender at the end of november has been secured by shoprite checkers.
the supermarket group's bid of r25.25 million excluding vat was the highest of 10 tenders received and guarantees that a minimum of 30 percent of the development will be held by individuals or groups from previously disadvantaged communities.
the site, strategically situated on the corner of otto du plessis drive and cormorant avenue (the east-west link between otto du plessis drive and the west coast road), will be surrounded by up to 1 800 new homes within about five years.
the basket of rights for the project includes 10 000m2 of commercial buildings and up to 120 residential units.
the shoprite checkers plan will ensure that the centre is anchored by a new generation checkers supermarket which, say the developers, is designed to make shopping a more enjoyable experience. their proposal promises that this will be an "international class facility" and that shoppers will have more choice, comfort and convenience than experienced before.
the "new generation" checkers supermarket will be complemented by an upmarket lifestyle mix of line shops including restaurants, a coffee shop, a nursery and other family and lifestyle orientated facilities.
conforming to the prescribed west coast style it will, said rabcav project manager, colin green, be an extremely attractive village-styled development.
"the architects, jonker barnes, have designed the complex so that the residential apartments complement the commercial square and provide an attractive, lively node at this northern entrance to big bay," said green.
he said that the price received reflected the added value taking place at big bay and would positively impact on the value of the 14.5ha beachfront property currently out on tender. the tender for this prime property will close on january 16, 2004. it is expected to attract bids of over r120m.
