Sanral said the closures are necessary to allow for the casting of concrete for the new N3 Market Road Overpass Bridge deck.
Motorists using the N3 through Pietermaritzburg have been advised to prepare for temporary overnight closures on June 26 at the Market Road interchange as construction on the major upgrade project continues.
The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) said the closures are necessary to allow for the casting of concrete for the new N3 Market Road Overpass Bridge deck, a key component of the N3 upgrade between Gladys Manzi Road and the New England Road interchange.
Construction continues on the Market Road interchange.
“Completion of the new bridge will signify a major milestone and bring us a step closer to opening of the upgraded interchange,” said SANRAL Eastern Region Geometrics Specialist Engineer Jason Lowe.
The temporary closures will be in effect from 8 pm on Friday, June 26, until 6 am on Saturday, June 27.
During this period, the N3 southbound off-ramp to Market Road, used by motorists travelling from Pietermaritzburg central and the northern areas towards Mkondeni, Scottsville and Cleland, will be fully closed.
The on-ramp from Market Road onto the N3 southbound towards Durban will also be closed.
Sanral stressed that the N3 itself will remain fully operational throughout the closure period.
The temporary southbound on-ramp on Cleland Road, opposite the Hayfields Mall entrance, will remain open to light vehicles weighing less than three tonnes.
Traffic accommodation measures will be implemented to ensure the safety of both motorists and construction teams.
Heavy vehicles and trucks have been advised to delay their trips where possible or make use of suitable staging areas to avoid severe congestion.
Public transport operators have also been urged to ensure that drivers are aware of the closures and alternative routes affecting commuter services.
Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys in advance and allow extra travel time.
“We understand that these road closures cause major disruption and have planned them to take place at times when the disruption is minimised,” said Lowe.
“Emergency services and traffic management are advised to make use of alternative routing. SANRAL apologises for any inconvenience caused and appreciates the public’s patience during the ongoing major road enhancements.”
