R40 maintenance and upgrade plans in Mbombela may include the construction of pedestrian bridges.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says plans are in place for maintenance and upgrades on the R40, which may include life-saving pedestrian bridges.

Sanral was responding to Lowvelder’s media enquiry following yet another road accident on Monday, October 6. A vehicle travelling south on the R40, between Riverside and the Mbombela CBD, struck an unidentified male at around 12:00. He was killed instantly. According to Divergent Ops COO Juandre Rautenbach, the man was part of Mbombela’s homeless community.

This stretch of road has seen a high number of similar accidents over the years. The latest incident has prompted many readers to call for safe crossings to be erected along the busy route.

When enquiries were submitted to the Department of Public Works, it confirmed that the road is the responsibility of Sanral.

Lerato Moloi, marketing and communications co-ordinator at Sanral in Gauteng, responded to Lowvelder’s enquiries:
“Since taking over additional sections of the R40 in November 2024, Sanral has focused on urgent repairs that can be implemented through the existing Routine Road Maintenance (RRM) contracts. Major capital interventions cannot be implemented through the RRM contracts,” she said. “The next phase is to conduct studies in high-accident zones to determine the types of interventions to be implemented, which might include the construction of pedestrian bridges.”

Moloi added that a study has been commissioned for this section of the road. “Short-term interventions proposed after the study will be implemented under RRM contracts. In the meantime, Sanral continues to urge pedestrians to be vigilant and responsible on the roads, to avoid jaywalking, and to only cross at designated crossing areas.”

She said the same approach applies at Rocky Drift and the section of the R40 near Medi Clinic Nelspruit.
