The upcoming Sandton BRT station, part of Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya expansion, promises to enhance public transport accessibility, especially for people with disabilities and underserved communities.
As a key component of the City of Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya phase 1C(a) expansion, the Sandton bus rapid transit (BRT) station is on track for completion by the fourth quarter of 2025.
This modern transport hub aims to revolutionise commuter experience in one of Johannesburg’s busiest commercial districts, with a special focus on accessibility for people with disabilities and improved connectivity for underserved communities.
According to Elias Nkabinde, marketing and communications manager for the Johannesburg Development Agency: “This project is more than just a transport station; it’s about creating an inclusive and accessible space for everyone, particularly people with disabilities who often face challenges in public transport. Features like tactile paving, wheelchair ramps, audio-visual announcements, and level boarding will ensure a seamless travel experience.”
The Sandton BRT station will form a critical link connecting the Johannesburg central business district (CBD), Wynberg, Balfour, Orange Grove, and Alexandra, integrating with other transport modes, such as the Gautrain, municipal buses, and minibus taxis.
This multi-modal approach is designed to facilitate quick, safe transfers and reduce travel times for daily commuters.
“By linking Sandton to surrounding communities, such as Alexandra and Wynberg, we are opening up greater economic opportunities and access to essential services, like hospitals, clinics, and schools,” said Nkabinde. “Additionally, the city’s free transport initiative allows pensioners and persons with disabilities to travel free on Rea Vaya buses, further supporting mobility and inclusion.”
The station’s design incorporates state of the art security measures, including CCTV surveillance, on-site security personnel, and real-time monitoring from the Operations Control Centre. “These features ensure a safe commuting environment throughout operational hours.”
With bus frequencies set to run every five minutes during peak hours, and express services connecting Sandton directly to Johannesburg’s CBD, the station is designed to handle high passenger volumes efficiently, reducing congestion and improving commuter comfort.
Economic benefits will also flow from the project, with job creation and small business opportunities embedded in both construction and operation phases. “The Alexandra Bus Company, involving former mini bus operators from Alexandra and Sandton, will manage services for the next twelve years, creating local employment and fostering community ownership.
“The Sandton BRT station is a game-changer for public transport in Johannesburg. It reflects our commitment to building an integrated, accessible, and safe transport network that meets the needs of all residents, especially those who have been underserved in the past.”
