Construction on the approximately R200 million Tshakhuma Mall in Limpopo is almost complete, and the mall is due to open on 28 September this year.

Tshakhuma Mall, in the Vhembe district, has been under construction since October 2022.

Designers of the mall have ensured that water and electricity do not deter the running of the establishment with solar and wastewater management initiatives in place.

Construction on the approximately R200 million Tshakhuma Mall in Limpopo is almost complete, and the mall is due to open on 28 September this year.

The development, located in the Vhembe district in Limpopo, will offer 11 500m2 of retail space on a single level property and has various initiatives to benefit surrounding communities.

According to the construction company, McCormick Property Development, the new mall has been strategically placed along the R524, on the outskirts of Thohoyandou, neighbouring one of the province's largest rural fruit and vegetable markets. This is to allow for numerous opportunities to benefit those living around the area.

The property, designed by MDS Architecture, aims to tackle water and electricity issues seriously, having put solar and wastewater management initiatives in place since the initial planning phases of the project.

In its portfolio, McCormick Property Development has developed various malls, shopping centres, and other recreational establishments, including Alex Mall, Chris Hani Crossing, Diepkloof Square, Edendale Mall, Mamelodi Square, Mall of Thembisa and many others.

“The mall has been designed with two prominent entrances which are softened by climbing greenery,” said Louis Pretorius, a partner at MDS Architecture.

“These feature cladding and prominent signage punctuated by pops of bright colour in order to create a border around each entrance."

To bring a sense of spaciousness, the mall's interior features wide passages, a neutral colour palette, and contemporary finishes.

The company said the ceiling also has contemporary linear lighting, while the mall is awash with natural light from unglazed clerestory windows.

“The food court is such an integral part of any retail development. We create these spaces with the distinct purpose of connecting with our customers," said MD of McCormick Property Development, Jason McCormick.
