Induna Sifiso Shange says the community is happy that at long last their suffering is coming to an end. Many people have died in the past after being washed away.
There is no alternative route for community to access Pietermaritzburg City Centre.
MEC for Transport and Human Settlments Siboniso Duma remarked: "This community is isolated and always battle to access, schools, and health facilities. They are forced to use this bridge and when there are floods, people get washed away," we have responded decisvely.
Duma further revealed that an integrated approach has been adopted to fast-track the construction of the bridge.
Department of Public Works, South African National Defense Force and Umsunduzi Local Municipality are working together to turn around the situation.
