The City of Ekurhuleni is finalising repairs to a burst sewer pipe on Hattingh Street in Elandsfontein, with road reinstatement expected by 27 June. Officials confirm the work is unrelated to water quality concerns raised by residents.
The City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) is nearing completion of repairs on a burst pipe in Elandsfontein’s Hattingh Street, which necessitated the closure of the road.
Ward 92 Clr Kade Guerreiro last week highlighted the issue, sparking concerns among residents about water quality in the area and the prolonged closure of the road.
According to the CoE, they focused repairs on the burst rising main of the sewer pump station, and these were unrelated to the water quality concerns.
City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini explained, “The repairs on the burst rising main are complete.
“However, the backfilling and compaction of the trench have been challenging because of the area’s waterlogged conditions, resulting from a high-water table.”
When asked about the expected completion date for the repairs and the restoration of the road to its original condition, Dlamini said the work to reinstate the road will commence this week, with an estimated completion date of June 27.
“In the meantime, the team will re-do the barricading of the trench and monitor it closely.
“They were instructed to ensure proper barricading to prevent incidents,” he added.
Dlamini emphasised the importance of maintenance in the city’s operations, saying, “Maintenance is a key component of our work, and we appreciate the necessity of this work to ensure the continued provision of services to our people.”
