A long-awaited road upgrade is underway, bringing excitement and promise of improved travel and economic benefits.
LIMPOPO – The upgrading of the 5km stretch of road on the D3715 between Madodonga and Tshikhodobo has sparked excitement among road users. The first phase of the project, which began in July, is set to be completed by the end of January 2025.
Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) has allocated R19m for the improvement of access roads, aiming to enhance the travel experience for motorists and improve connectivity in the area.
On February 9, the former MEC for Public Works Nkakareng Rakgoale and RAL representatives visited the area to introduce the contractor, promising that phase two of the D3715 rehabilitation would start in March. Due to unforeseen delays, work however, started in July.
The first phase will cover the remaining 5km stretch from Madodonga to Tshikwarani, near the Kutama clinic, with the second phase of 3.1km commencing after the completion of the first phase.
Luyanda Sithole, RAL’s communication manager, explained that the delay was caused by community protests, which insisted the project start at a different location than planned. The project, originally set for a six-month timeline, is now scheduled to be completed by January 2025.
A local resident, Joe Mulelu urged road users to cooperate with contractors throughout the construction period.
“This project is ours, and it is important to adhere to the safety instructions at all times. This will give the contractors ample time to finish their work without any disturbances,” he said.
Mulelu highlighted the potential benefits, including easing traffic flow, employing local residents, and transferring valuable skills to workers.
Shoni Nedzamba, a local taxi driver, expressed delight at the rehabilitation project.
“We have been complaining several times about the poor state of the road we use on a daily basis, but we are happy that our pleas did not fall on deaf ears. The improved roads will extend the life of our vehicles and reduce the number of road accidents,” he said.
