Roads department defends K73 upgrade as it repairs potholes

The Gauteng department of roads and transport has moved to repair potholes on the K73 after criticism over the deteriorating condition by motorist and Midrand councillor Annette Deppe.

Motorists travelling along the K73 Allandale Road can finally enjoy a smoother drive after the Gauteng department of roads and transport (GDRT) attended to potholes near the intersection leading to Kyalami Preparatory School from Mushroom Farm Centre.

The repairs come after Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe previously criticised the department for allegedly neglecting the road following its multi-million-rand upgrade.

Deppe raised concerns that the road had already begun showing signs of deterioration, including the emergence of potholes, despite only reopening to motorists in 2023.

Speaking on behalf of the GDRT, spokesperson Lesiba Mpya confirmed that complaints regarding the condition of the road had been received and addressed under the department’s routine road maintenance programme.

“The potholes have been patched. Inspections were conducted at the end of the defects liability period in September 2025.”

Deppe also alleged that the department failed to conduct a proper quality assessment of the completed work after the road reopened.

She further claimed that the pavement surrounding the traffic circle, near Kyalami Preparatory School, had never been completed.

Responding to these allegations, Mpya stated that a final inspection had in fact been carried out and that a final approval certificate had been issued for the project.

“The traffic circle point is beyond the limit of construction. Therefore, it was not part of the scope of works. The section beyond the limit of construction belongs to the municipality, not GDRT.”
