After months of delays, 5th Street repairs are expected to be completed next week.

Businesses on 5th Street in Wynberg may soon see an end to months of disruption as repair work on the damaged roadway outside number 72 nears completion.

The road collapsed after a burst stormwater pipe, leaving businesses struggling with restricted access and safety concerns as they wait for repairs to begin. According to Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart, number 72 5th Street has been severely damaged since October last year.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency said the work on the site is now about 90% complete and is expected to be finalised by June 8.

Acting head of department for regional operations, Mpho Maruping, said the major infrastructure work has already been completed.

“The stormwater jobbing has been completed, and the team is busy with road base preparations for the reinstatement of tar that has been scheduled to be completed by Monday, June 8.”

He confirmed that the damaged stormwater pipe has been replaced and that all materials required for the project are now available on site.

“The stormwater pipe replacement has been completed. The reinstatement is 90% complete as of June 3.”

The only remaining work involves the final road reinstatement and tarring before the road can be fully reopened to motorists.

He added that the project remains on schedule and that businesses and motorists can expect normal access to be restored on June 8.

Maruping also confirmed that no unforeseen challenges or delays have been encountered since repair work began.

“We went to the site on June 9, and the damaged section of road outside 72 5th Street in Wynberg has been backfilled and prepared for final tarring.”
