These are necessary because of the anticipated increase in traffic in these areas, as per the Mossel Bay Spatial Development Framework

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Some changes can be expected on Louis Fourie Road and the R102 and roads intersecting these in the future.

During the special council meeting held on 25 April, an item was served before council, part of which gives details on planning for road improvements over the next 30 to 60 years.

These are necessary because of the anticipated increase in traffic in these areas, as per the Mossel Bay Spatial Development Framework (MBSDF). The item stated that numerous developments were currently in progress or planned in Hartenbos north, Aalwyndal and the Louis Fourie Road precinct and road improvements are planned in these areas.

Part of the item takes into consideration the combined impact of all the known planned and current developments within the Hartenbos "north sub area", and it states that the road improvements will be required to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic.

The improvements include:

• Widen the R102 to a dual carriageway road with two lanes per direction from Louis Fourie Road up to and including the Vintage access (Vintage access/intersection is located on this link and will in future provide secondary access to The Garden Walk Mall);
• Widen Minor Road 6804 (this road, or the extension thereof, provides connectivity between the N2 southbound carriageway and the R102) to two lanes per direction from the R102 to the N2 southbound ramp terminal;
• Signalisation and widening of the following intersections:
- R102 and Louis Fourie Road Intersection (Waboom Street, Hartenbos Heuwels)
- R102 and Planned New Access road A intersection (Salt & Copper restaurant, Hartenbos);
- R102 and N2 northbound ramp terminal;
- R102 and Monte Christo Road Eco Estate intersection;
- Minor Road 6804 and N2 southbound ramp terminal;
- R102 and Vintage intersection;
- R102 and Kasuur Street intersection (Hartland Lifestyle Estate underpass).
• Implement a roundabout along Monte Christo Road, approximately 840 metres to the west of the R102.
• With the consideration of planned and current developments within the Hartenbos north sub area, it is anticipated that a secondary road network might be required in future to support the 2023 Mossel Bay Roads Transportation Plan. Provision therefore must be made for the northward extension of a "planned new access road B" to provide a second access point to the area to the west of the R102.
