The long-distance haulers and the farming community are currently driving on the verges of the road as the tarred area is cordoned off due roadworks.
Landowners and road users have noticed that the refurbishment project on Badfontein Road (R36) stopped suddenly three weeks ago.
The road has a traffic load of at least 780 heavy chrome carriers and light vehicles per day, according to local landowners.
According to Bongani Dhlamini, the spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport, the contractor suspended its work due to payment-related issues..”The contractor wanted payment for materials not on-site, and the department couldn’t comply. It issues payment for each section after it has been inspected and approved,” said Dhlamini.
Dhlamini said there had been significant progress on the road. All storm water pipes have been laid, and the contractor is building the shoulders. Road users currently drive on temporary bypasses.
Dhlamini said the current estimated completion date is February 2024.
