Most people who took to social media to air their frustrations are blaming the damage on the construction of a nearby shopping centre.

THE municipality is aware of the problem of a sunken roadway along Umfuleni Road, where the subsoil storm water system collapsed and was tarred over.

This was according to Ward 97 councillor, André Beetge, when responding to complaints from motorists and residents that using the road had become dangerous because of the damage. Most people who took to social media to air their frustrations were blaming the damage on the construction of a nearby shopping centre. Beetge refuted this.

“This has nothing to do with the adjacent construction. The anticipated replacement of the pipe does not warrant construction to be stopped. The recent filling of the cavity was never intended as a quick fix or repair, but rather an intermediate measure while the replacement is out to tender, as is required by legislation,” said Beetge.

He added that the relevant department has been requested to implement additional measures in anticipation of the tender being awarded.
