In efforts to deliver quality roads and safe driving for motorists, Phoenix residents woke up to repaired and smooth roads. Led by Ward 48 DA Councillor Michelle Lutchmen, the road rehabilitation programme addressed a long-standing road issue in Phoenix.

Lutchmen said these roads are over 40 years old and have been poorly maintained. “After multiple meetings with department officials (eThekwini Municipality) and on-site visits to advocate for the necessary upgrades, I have successfully secured the budget allocation, which is why these improvements are now underway.”

Lutchmen added: “This has been a long-standing issue; the roads are in a state of disrepair, and I have consistently advocated for upgrades across the ward. I’m pleased that work has begun on a few roads, and I will continue to push for the rehabilitation of all remaining roads in need of repair.”

Lutchmen noted that there are no gravel roads in her ward. However, she suspects the water department is responsible for man-made potholes, as they simply put up danger tape and leave, assuming the tape will repair the pothole.

Referring to the municipality’s Inner-City Regeneration programme, Lutchmen said: “The municipality consistently faces budget constraints, with many departments operating under financial strain. To facilitate necessary upgrades and ensure progress, departments must adopt more strategic and disciplined budgeting practices.”

The Ward 48 road rehabilitation programme covers Stonebridge, Greenbury, Clayfield, Centenary Park, Rockford, Campbells Town Park, and Phoenix Industrial Park.

During a council meeting last month, the eThekwini Municipality committed to upgrading 14km of gravel road to blacktop and burying potholes. Additionally, they stated that over R217 billion would be allocated to various catalytic projects, creating 300,000 jobs, including addressing roads and potholes.
