For many years, residents have faced challenges when travelling between Cornubia and Woodview for work, education, business and leisure.

Residents of Cornubia and Woodview are set to benefit from a major infrastructure project to improve connectivity and create new economic opportunities, with plans underway to construct an overhead bridge linking the two communities.

Councillor, Rashina Singh, described the project as more than just a physical structure, calling it a symbol of unity and progress that will help bridge long-standing barriers between the neighbouring areas.

“As we stand on the precipice of a transformative project that promises to redefine the connectivity between Cornubia and Woodview, it is essential to reflect not only on the structural implications but also on the socio-economic and environmental impact of the bridge,” said Cllr Singh.

For many years, residents have faced challenges when travelling between Cornubia and Woodview for work, education, business and leisure.

Cllr Singh said the lack of efficient transport links has contributed to isolation and limited economic opportunities for both communities.

The proposed bridge is expected to stimulate local economic growth by improving access between the two areas.

Easier movement of people, goods and services is anticipated to create opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs on both sides of the bridge.

“Entrepreneurs in Cornubia will find a more accessible market in Woodview, and vice versa. This project is not just about infrastructure – it’s about creating a vibrant economic ecosystem where opportunities are abundant for all,” Cllr Singh explained.

While highlighting the project’s benefits, Cllr Singh stressed the importance of protecting the environment throughout the construction process.

She said sustainable building practices and comprehensive environmental assessments would form a key part of the development.

“It is our responsibility to ensure that this bridge does not disrupt the delicate balance of our local ecosystems. The bridge must serve as a conduit for human connection without sacrificing the natural beauty and integrity of our shared environment,” she added.

Community participation will also play a central role in the project’s development. She encouraged residents to actively engage in consultations, with town hall meetings, surveys and open forums expected to be held to gather public input.

“A project of this magnitude should not be dictated from the top down. This bridge belongs to the community, and its construction should reflect our collective vision,” she said.

Safety and accessibility have been identified as key priorities in the bridge’s design. Plans include features that will accommodate pedestrians, cyclists and motorists, with considerations for wide walkways, bicycle lanes and adequate lighting to ensure the structure is accessible to all users.

Cllr Singh also acknowledged the role played by Member of Parliament, Roy Moodley, noting that the matter was taken to the National Parliament, helping to pave the way for the project to move forward.

“As we embark on this journey, I call upon all stakeholders – government officials, engineers, environmentalists and community members – to collaborate in realising this vision,” Cllr Singh said.

She added that the bridge represents more than an engineering achievement, describing it as a testament to resilience, progress and the power of community collaboration.

“Together, we can create a future where every resident feels valued, connected and empowered,” she concluded.
