Frustrated yet determined, residents remain hopeful that their pleas will be heard and that urgent intervention will prevent further damage and ensure safer, more accessible roads.
Residents are at their wits’ end as the worsening condition of Magnum Road continues to make daily life a struggle. Yvonne Ackerman, the Wilgeheuwel Honeydew Residents Association secretary, shared her frustrations, describing how the road becomes muddy and impassable during the rainy season, making access to homes nearly impossible.
“The road is in a horrible condition. We, as residents, can’t drive there,” she said. “I drive a small Kia Picanto, and it’s not easy to access our house. Family members don’t visit anymore because they’re scared their cars will get damaged.”
The worsening state of the road has also led to disruptions in essential services.
“Our rubbish bins don’t get collected because the trucks can’t get through,” Ackerman explained. “We’ve tried to close some of the ditches ourselves, but to no avail.”
Residents have called on the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) to intervene, but their requests appear to have gone unanswered.
The Roodepoort Northsider sent questions to JRA regarding the road’s condition and whether any repair plans are in place, but no response has been received at the time of publication.
