The long-delayed repair of a collapsed section of road on 5th Street in Wynberg is finally underway.

Businesses on 5th Street in Wynberg finally saw signs of progress this week after repair teams from Johannesburg Water and Johannesburg Roads Agency arrived on site to begin work on the long-standing sinkhole.

The road collapse, caused by a pipe burst, has disrupted businesses and restricted access to the area since October last year. Ward 91 councillor Andrew Stewart confirmed that work had officially started, although some delays were experienced due to material shortages. “They didn’t have the piping, but they said it should be arriving tomorrow.”

He explained that officials believe the repair itself should now move relatively quickly compared to other major infrastructure failures previously experienced in the area. “They reckon that after replacing the pipe, it’s actually a straightforward job compared to the other big holes we had before. There doesn’t appear to be additional hidden problems, like sewer pipes or damaged concrete chambers, that also need repairs.”

According to Stewart, officials indicated that residents and businesses could see major visible improvement by the end of the week. “They think that, by Friday, there will be a huge improvement. They will still need to continue with the tarring and finishing work afterward.”

While immediate repair work is now underway, the full reinstatement process could still take several weeks to complete. “They were saying the entire project, including final tarring and everything being fully completed, could take about six weeks. We will continue monitoring the situation and holding them accountable.”
