Remaining Muizenberg beach huts to be removed as beachfront upgrade progresses

The remaining four iconic beach huts on the eastern side of Muizenberg beachfront will be dismantled from next week as work on the City's beachfront refurbishment project moves into its next phase.

The City of Cape Town said the removal marks another milestone in the upgrade, which began in February 2025 and remains on track for completion by December this year.

The four beach huts on the western side of the beachfront were removed in March. Once construction is complete, all eight huts will be replaced with new structures built in keeping with the historic design and layout of the originals, while offering improved durability.

According to the City, the existing huts need to be removed because the upgraded promenade will be built about two metres further inland.

The setback is intended to respond to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels and storm surges, while ensuring the new seawall does not reduce the width of the beach.

The refurbishment project includes replacing ageing seawalls and upgrading public amenities along the beachfront.

The City said approximately 60% of the precast steps and promenade units have already been installed. These structures will provide coastal protection and beach access at different levels, with most of the steps remaining buried beneath the sand during normal beach conditions.

Work on the reinforced concrete seawall at Surfer's Corner is nearing completion, while construction has also started on the parking area next to the railway line and the surrounding landscaping.

"I know our residents are very protective of Muizenberg's iconic beach huts. This is why we want to communicate upfront about the fact that we will be dismantling the remaining four huts so that we can start with the work on the eastern side of the beachfront."

He said the next phase showed that the project was progressing well and remained on schedule.

"I again want to thank our business community, our local community, the visitors and general public for your patience and support while we are upgrading this very popular beach destination. Your cooperation is much appreciated and makes it possible for us to work at a steady pace," Andrews said.

The City confirmed that the beach huts closer to the river mouth will not be affected by the upgrade and will remain in place.
