Motorists are in for a smoother ride as various roads in Asanda Village and Nomzamo are set to be rehabilitated and resurfaced by the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate.
Planning and the setting up of the work site commenced last Wednesday (15 February) and work will be visible only within a few weeks, with the project set to be completed at the end of March.
Council called on road users to plan accordingly and avoid the affected areas as far as possible, as traffic flow will be impacted once the work starts. The repairs are planned for weekdays from 07:00 to 17:00, but may also take place on weekends and public holidays, if required.
Flag personnel will be stationed at strategic points to direct traffic through temporary detours around the work area. Residents are also advised that vehicles parked on the road and obstructing the maintenance work will be moved or towed.
The planned maintenance will be conducted to Juqu, Xakia, Thunzi, Phaliso, Shumani, Mkhungelwa, Jaxa, Magatya, Fikile, Phikela, Howard and Sithunzi streets.
“We ask that the community please cooperate with our team on the ground and that they protect the workmen from those wanting to intimidate, harass and extort their way into projects,” said Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility. “This will only cause disruption and delays, and potentially raise the cost of projects due to contractors being forced to hire additional security. We would like to rehabilitate and resurface portions of these roads to provide residents in the area with safe and smooth road surfaces. It is in the interests of all of us that the work continues as planned.”
The work, which forms part of regular road maintenance, will entail the milling out of the existing road surfacing and replacing it with a new asphalt road surface, while the existing concrete roads will undergo cracking and sealing, and upgrades to the asphalt. Road markings will also be repainted once the road surface has been installed.
In addition, several new curbs and sidewalks will be constructed in the area, along with traffic calming measures like speed humps and raised intersections.
