The Pelindaba road will finally be upgraded at the cost of R630 million over a 45-month period.
R630 million will be spent to upgrade the Pelindaba road.
The North West Department of Public Works and Roads said work on one of the biggest planned road rehabilitation projects in the country has kicked off in Hartbeespoort. The refurbishment of the 22 km stretch of road from Necsa to Pecanwood will include the construction of a dual carriageway on some parts of the road. It will also include the construction of a bridge and the widening of the existing single-carriageway to include road shoulders.
“This road is one of the strategic economic corridors in the country and massive investment in the rehabilitation work fits perfectly into the envisaged plan by the government to establish a smart city and economic hub in the area at some point. Work on the multi-million road rehabilitation project has technically commenced from the border of Gauteng,” spokesperson Matshube Mfoloe said.
The road passes Pelindaba to Pecanwood Estate up until the junction of the R560.
“This is by far one of the country’s key strategic routes carrying large volumes of traffic from the North West to Gauteng. The spin-offs from this long-term investment by the department are expected to be significant not only for the two neighbouring provinces but for the country as a whole.”
This 45-month contract will be undertaken by Pelindaba JV M Civils and Eigenbau and Wenhaus and will also include the bridge construction and repair works on the same road. “It is expected that 447 job opportunities will be created for the local communities during the construction phase with an estimated R128 million set aside for sub-contracting to deserving and competent small businesses and emerging businesses in Madibeng Local Municipality and its surroundings.”
The Pelindaba road project is one of 28 road upgrading, rehabilitation and maintenance projects being implemented by the department in the province and funded through the Provincial Road Maintenance Grant (PRMG) and Equitable Share (ES)
In Madibeng Local Municipality three other special maintenance road projects with a combined contract value of R121 million are being implemented.
These include:
- A R47 million project for pothole-patching and resealing of the Brits to Rosslyn road (D980), including the intersection and safety improvements of road R512. Lebo Tebo Trading and Projects was awarded the contract.
- R32,9 million has been allocated for a special maintenance project on the R104 between Majakaneng and Hartbeespoort. The appointed contractor is MSK/Gadimakatse JV.
- The R42 million sectional patchwork and rehabilitation of the road between Maboloka and Fafung (P63/1) in Madibeng is undertaken by Dot Africa Civils
- A special maintenance project of the R511 from Bethani to Brits by Lethukuthula Development Project will cost R36.7 million.
