The gravel stretch between the Golden Highway and the Putco Depot on the R554 had been a nightmare to motorists, with some having resorted to using longer routes to avoid using the road.
FOLLOWING pressure from various entities based within Lenasia and motorists who frequent the R554, road works have finally started.
According to the contractor, the road should be fully asphalted and open to motorists by May 2023, leaving only the cosmetic finish to be completed – three years after the completion date. Motorists can now breathe a sigh of relief as roadworks to complete the 3km stretch of road have begun.
The gravel stretch between the Golden Highway and the Putco Depot on the R554 had been a nightmare to motorists, with some having resorted to using longer routes to avoid using the road.
The contractor told the Rising Sun that the delay in the completion of the project was mainly due to contractual issues between themselves and the Department of Roads and Transport.
“The contract was reinstated on certain conditions. One of the conditions is that work should be
completed 16 weeks from the date we get paid what is due to us. As it is, the work should be completed in 16 weeks. Right now, the priority area is the 3km stretch which isgiving us headaches,” he said.
The right-hand lane has been levelled and is constantly being watered to reduce dust and loose stones damaging vehicles.
He said as soon as they receive the designs, construction should commence on the road which will take about six weeks. The left lane will also take the same amount of time to complete.
“Once we have completed the 3km stretch, we can complete the finishing touches to other problems. While we are here, there will be other sub-contractors doing minor works on the road, such as the Lehae intersection, the Scorpio Drive intersection, and the engineering of the road,” he said.
He said that engineers were in discussion with JRA to deal with ponding water at the Scorpio Drive intersection and at the Trade Route Mall Intersection.
