The City of Cape Town has officially completed the construction of two new MyCiTi bus depots, marking a significant milestone in South Africa’s largest metro-led public transport project.
Located at the corner of Spine Road and Mew Way between Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain, these R430 million facilities will house and maintain the new bus fleet for the upcoming MyCiTi route expansion that links the metro-south east with Claremont and Wynberg.
During a recent visit earlier today, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Councillor Rob Quintas, Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, toured the completed sites, praising the progress and vision behind the project.
The MyCiTi N2 Express service, which currently connects Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to Cape Town’s central business district, is already one of the city’s busiest transport corridors.
The next phase, extending services to Wynberg and Claremont, is expected to bring major relief and opportunity to communities across the south-east.
‘It is amazing to see the infrastructure rising before our eyes to bring safe, affordable and reliable public transport along new routes linking Khayelitsha, Mitchells Plain and communities across the metro-south east,’ stated Mayor Hill-Lewis.
He added that the overall MyCiTi service expansion comes at an investment of R10 billion, which is the largest metro-led public transport initiative in South Africa’s history.
‘The MyCiTi service expansion is one of the pillars of Cape Town’s record infrastructure investments, which amounts to R40 billion over the next three years, with 75% directly benefitting lower-income households,’ he said.

Each of the new depots spans 7.5 hectares and has an initial capacity for up to 145 buses, with space to expand to 250 buses each as the service grows.
Based on details shared by the City of Cape Town, the facilities are equipped with:
- Fully functional mechanical workshops
- Refuelling and maintenance facilities
- Underground infrastructure ready for electric bus charging
- Automated bus-cleaning systems
- Office space, along with drivers’ rest areas and ablution facilities
Councillor Quintas noted that the project exceeded its local employment targets, creating work opportunities for nearly 500 residents from Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, while 46 small local sub-contractors played a role in the build.
‘The depots will be the beating heart of our new route expansion,’ said Quintas. ‘They bring improved, universally accessible mobility for residents, as well as more jobs, economic growth, and better futures for all of us.’
In addition to the depot construction, several major infrastructure projects are underway across the metro-south east. These developments are designed to ensure that the extended MyCiTi network delivers on its promise of being safe, affordable, and universally accessible.
Key projects include:
- The construction of the Sky Circle at Govan Mbeki Road and Jan Smuts Drive, a first-of-its-kind in South Africa
- Bridge construction over Duynefontein and Govan Mbeki Roads
- Dedicated bus lanes, stops, and cycling infrastructure along Govan Mbeki Road
- Major upgrades to Turfhall Road and AZ Berman Drive
- Reconstruction of key thoroughfares including Stanhope, Imam Haron, and Chichester Roads, as well as widened intersections at Claremont Boulevard, Palmyra Road, and Doncaster Road
These projects collectively support the long-term vision for a more integrated, connected, and accessible Cape Town.
Construction on the new depots began in August 2022, and the City of Cape Town’s Urban Mobility Directorate has been managing the project from the start.
Once the new routes between Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Claremont, and Wynberg become operational, these depots will serve as the central hubs keeping the MyCiTi network running efficiently.
