The appointment of four contractors to work on the Malamulele East Water Supply Scheme was welcomed. The scheme aims to address water problems in villages around Malamulele in the Collins Chabane Municipality.

The contractors — Aphane Consulting Engineers, Good Example Trading and Projects, Risima Project Management, and Neckmay Trading Enterprise — received their appointment letters on 21 January. The project is valued at R400 million and has a 12-month construction period.

During the handover of the appointment letters in the Collins Chabane Council chambers, Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) executive mayor Freda Nkondo warned that the municipality does not want “white elephant” projects in Vhembe.

“We are ready to fast-track the delivery of clean water to our communities,” she said, urging the contractors to deliver quality work.

Hosi Bohane Shigamane expressed excitement about the prospects of improved water delivery. “I’m happy that the Vhembe district is ready to change life for the better for my communities, who mostly share water sources with animals because of a shortage of clean water. We also understand that, when water projects such as these are implemented in our villages, rural unemployed communities will get jobs,” said Hosi Shigamane.

One of the contractors, Tshifhiwa Luvhengo of Good Example Consulting Engineers, said he was happy to be part of the project. His scope of work includes the construction of a 15-million-litre water tower at Malamulele Crossing; the construction of a PVC bulk pipeline that off-takes from the existing DN355 pipeline, running down to Muswane; the construction of a new off-take bulk pipeline to supply the existing Jimmy Jones reservoir; and the upgrade and extension of the Jimmy Jones reticulation from communal standpipes to yard-level connections.
