Road users are excited about the upgrading of the 3.7 km D3669 road between Mavhunga and Phadzima, from gravel to tar. The project began in June this year and is expected to be completed by the end of June 2024.

The upgrade of road D3669 is part of the comprehensive plan announced by Ms Nkakareng Rakgoale, the MEC for the Limpopo Department of Public Works, Roads, and Infrastructure, during the 2023/24 budget speech. The plan focuses on improving the road network in the area. Rakgoale stated that 14 individuals from the local community had been employed on the project, which aimed to empower small local businesses as well.

The Road Agency Limpopo (RAL) has allocated R39-million for the improvement of access roads, enhancing the travel experience for motorists and improving connectivity in the area. Ms Luyanda Sithole, RAL’s communication manager, stated that they had initiated seven upgrading projects in the current financial year, with a focus on converting gravel roads into tarred surfaces. Sithole emphasised that RAL recognised the importance of road maintenance and upgrading in meeting the transportation needs of the people of Limpopo.

Sithole explained that the first phase of the project involves a stretch of just over three kilometres of road. “Local community members and motorists have expressed concerns about the road’s condition for some time. They will also receive skills training to support themselves after the project’s completion,” she said.

A local taxi driver, Mr Phalandwa Phalandwa, who operates between Nzhelele and Louis Trichardt daily, expressed his concerns about the poor condition of the road. “We warmly welcome this project because we have been waiting for a long time. Besides extending the lifespan of our vehicles, it will make our lives easier as we can travel from one place to another without worrying about the road’s poor condition,” he said.
