Transnet says road rehabilitation work in and around the Port of Durban is almost complete.
Over the years, truck volumes into the port have surged, putting pressure on local roads and stormwater systems.
Twenty-one roads across the Bayhead, Maydon Wharf, and Island View precincts are being repaired in the R340 million project.
Durban Port Manager Nkumbuzi Ben-Mazwi says the routes are vital for moving various cargo, including vehicles, coal, iron, and oil.
"Bayhead Road is a key road to what we call the Durban container terminal, which is run by our sister company, TPT. In there, we handle most of the containers for South Africa - they are run in that precinct.
"Since our rail is not working, we are on the trajectory of improving it, which will affect the handling of containers, which will affect the economy of the country and will affect many other businesses."
